Hatching
Module 2 - Introduction

Now, that we have discovered the uses of sketching to provide the form for our subject, let’s look a little at a method for adding depth. For many centuries, hatching was the most common form of adding depth and creating texture in a drawing. So, what is hatching? I’m sure you’ve dabbled in hatching without even knowing it while doodling on a piece of paper

Hatching: Shading with closely drawn parallel or intersecting lines.

Module Goal.

This module will introduce and define the techniques of hatching and cross-hatching. We will explore the difference between the two and discover which mediums are most commonly associated with these techniques and why. We will also examine hatching techniques employed by art masters Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt. When you compete this module, you will be able to identify and distinguish between the two hatching techniques and be able to apply these techniques to your own still-life drawing composition.

Module Objectives.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify and distinguish between hatching and cross-hatching techniques in a composition. (CO 1)

  2. Recognize the art mediums in which hatching is most associated. (CO 1)

  3. Examine the hatching techniques employed by Albrecht Durer and Rembrandt. (CO 2)

  4. Demonstrate proper use of the hatching techniques by applying them to a composition. (CO 3)

Ready to Get Started?

Are you ready to be inspired? Let's watch a video of a fellow artist utilizing the hatching and cross-hatching technique within his artwork. Notice he starts with a simple sketch to define the form of the subject and then applies hatching techniques to develop the depth within the composition. This video runs around 16 minutes, but it is a great insight into how to utilize sketching with hatching to create stunning drawings. Do I expect your final compositions to be at this level? Certainly not! I expect you to be inspired to practice in order to achieve this level!
