Additive & Subtractive Drawing
Module 6 - Introduction

In this final module, we will be covering two fundamental drawing techniques: additive drawing and subtractive drawing and how these two techniques can work together to create some impressive pieces. These techniques are unique in that they can be used together or separate to create compositions that stand apart from the traditional techniques.

Additive & Subtractive Drawing: Additive drawing is the building of values to create depth and form by placing line after line on paper. Subtractive drawing is the process of covering the canvas with charcoal and removing the charcoal to define the form and depth of a subject.

Module Goal.

This module will introduce and define the techniques of additive and subtractive drawing and how these techniques can be applied together to refine a composition. We will explore the artist most associated with utilizing these techniques and include the use of this technique in your own composition. When you complete this module, you will be able to identify the difference between these two techniques and demonstrate the capacity to implement both techniques in your own composition.

Module Objectives.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify the additive and subtractive techniques used in a composition. (CO 1)

  2. Identify the difference between additive and subtractive drawing techniques.  (CO 1)

  3. Recognize the artist most associated with using additive and subtractive drawing.  (CO 2)

  4. Demonstrate proper use of the additive and subtractive techniques by applying it to a composition. (CO 3)

Ready to Get Started?

So... what is additive and subtractive drawing? Officially, these are considered two separate techniques, however, in many instances these techniques are combined together to make one overall approach to drawing. So, what is it? One technique or two techniques? As with all art, you decide! It's open to perspective and how you wish to utilize. Many artists use these approaches together to create a composition which makes it a technique all to its own. However, there are just as many artists who use them separately, in which case, makes them two separate techniques altogether. Below is a video quickly explaining the details of each. In this particular video, these techniques are combined as one. Enjoy!
