Sketching
Module 1 - Evaluation

Now that we have discussed the role sketching plays in the creation of a composition, let's evaluate what you have learned from this module. This evaulation will be a combination of a discussion activity, multiple choice assessment, and a sketching assignment utilizing the sketching technique.

Discussion.
(5pts)

This module introduced us to sketching and the valuable role it can play when creating a composition. Let's discuss its role in this capacity by clicking on the "discussion" button below. Within the "Module 1 Discussion" category, create a post and explain two important purposes sketching serves in creating a composition.

While you're there, please introduce yourself as well. I expect you to abide by the "Forum Rules" in all of your postings throughout this course. Please review the forum rules in the "Introduce Yourself" category.

Formative Assessment:
Let's See What You've Learned.

(5pts)

Let's test your understanding of the material discussed in the lecture on sketching. Click "start" on the quiz below and see if you can pass this simple test. You must achieve an 80% to pass.

Good luck!

Summative Assessment.
(10pts)

Student Still Life Sketching

This is an example of a still-life sketch. This individual used shading to indicate depth, you are not required to do so in your assignment.

Now, let's put our sketching technique to good use! Using the sketching technique explained in this module, sketch three still-life items located in your environment using your sketchbook. The items can be anything located within your house or office, such as a potted plant or a cup near your desktop computer. Don't make the subject matter too busy. Keep the items to one or two per each sketch.

You don't have to add shading if you wish not to. Remember, this is just a sketch and we are mostly looking at sketching the form of the subject. We will dive deeper into shading and adding depth in later modules.

When you have finished, email them to me by using the email address in the footer below. We will be sharing these sketches with your peers in the following module, so please make them G-rated.

Be sure to purchase the supplies needed for this assignment by using the supply guide below before starting.

When you have finished, you can either participate in the bonus activity below or simply move on to the module summary by clicking the "next" button below.

Supply List.
  • Sketchbook. Any size that fits your style or comfortability.

  • Set of Graphite Drawing pencils. Be sure to use a soft grade pencil so it will show up in your scan (ie: 2B).

  • Pencil Sharpener.

  • Kneaded Eraser. This allows you to knead the eraser into a fine point for tight areas needing graphite removal. Also, it leaves very little mess when erasing. Watch the video below to learn more about this great little eraser.

  • Gum Eraser. This eraser is perfect for mass erasing or edges.

Bonus Activity.
(5pts)

In our lecture, we discovered that Leonardo da Vinci utilized sketching as a means to study subject matter before applying that subject into a final composition with his masterpiece, "Virgin of the Rocks". For this bonus activity, I want you to find another great artist utilizing sketching in this manner. Email me the sketch of the subject matter and the final piece in which that subject is used. Explain in your email how the artist utilized their study to improve their final work.

This bonus activity is not mandatory.
