DRAWING 101
Sketching
Module 1 - Summary
In conclusion, sketching plays a crucial role in drawing as it serves as a foundational step in the artistic process. It provides an opportunity for exploration, defining form and structure, and developing observational skills required in art. In the following modules we will see how sketching can be utilized in defining the form of the subject matter prior to the artist refining the detail via shading and contrasts. There would be no bigger headache than to realize that you have finished a piece only to notice that your hands are too big for the subject model or that your cat has one bigger ear than the other (unless it was intentional). Sketching allows those mistakes to be fixed.
In the next module we will discover the technique of adding depth to our subject. Depth allows us to render the subject in more detail and added realism. So, sharpen those pencils and find an empty page in your sketch book, because we are about to embark on a wonderful discovery of hatching and cross-hatching.
